Every few months there's a shiny new app and it promises to make your life easier. You get excited, you sign up, you start using it. But then another app comes along. It catches your eye, so you switch again ♾️ And this cycle keeps on repeating, and each switch feels like progress, but in reality it's just, it's slowing you down. I've been there with Notion and Jira and all the other apps I tried in my day job And I've done it with music apps as well, recently. I jumped from Spotify, and then I went to Apple Music. It took a while to migrate everything over to there, and now I've done it to YouTube Music. Not because YouTube Music is any better, but because of the price of Apple Music and the plan there, and the fact that YouTube realised I'm not actually in India, so I'm having to pay full price for it now... But looking back, that was all probably a waste of time, and I could have just stuck with Spotify. Now the same thing happens with productivity tools. Every time you switch to a new app, you're:
​ And again it feels like progress, but in the long run it just slows you and your entire team down. And then there's a financial cost as well. All these apps come with subscriptions. Maybe you've bought it for a year, and now you're having to pay for another year on another app before this one is finished. There's a power of sticking with one app. When you commit to a single tool, then you master it. I like to think I've mastered ClickUp and Project Management as far as I can master that at the minute. Obviously there's loads more to learn, but I'm a good way in. The more familiar you become with the tool, the less you have to think about how to use it and then that frees up energy and time to actually focus on your work. And the whole point in these tools is to get shit done. For me, ClickUp is what helps me get shit done. It has everything I need in one place, it's got AI in there now as well, and I've stuck to it for a couple of years, and it works. We need to stop chasing the perfect app. There's no perfect app! Every tool has pros and cons, and if you keep chasing the next big thing, you'll always be in search mode instead of actually doing the work.
